Senate Republicans Block Auto Bailout
Pretty stunning disregard for workers, even by Republican standards.
Note, the Republicans had to actually FILIBUSTER to block the bill!
And all for what-- to allow a major industry to go BK and put the death blow on a staggering economy? Not to mention it's hard to see how this helps their party! It's pretty much going to keep them in the political wilderness for a long time, as far as I can see it.
Some thoughts on the filibustering process here. Basically, is it really too much to have a party that wants to filibuster REALLY filibuster? You know, the non-stop talking filibuster-- a famous example being the one shown in the movie "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington".

Wouldn't it be better to help the Big 3 sell off as much of their large inventory of new vehicles?
Why not do as Argentina is now doing and help consumers be able to purchase a brand's least expensive model for right at what it cost to manufacture it?
That way, the economic benefits would help a broader spectrum of our economy.
the *bail out* would not help the auto workers anyway. it would only help the big-wigs of big 3 who have already stated that they would invest bail out money in their over-seas operations.
there are thousands upon thousands of new cars piling up at the ports of long beach and los angeles because the regular joe six-pack can't afford to buy one these days.
maybe if the politicos had not allowed good jobs to be out sourced while simultaneously allowing america to be flooded with low wage earning immigrants there wouldn't be any need for these phony *bail outs*.
well, all I can say is that the auto industry is so huge that if it goes BK, then we're going to have really massive unemployment and another great depression. I'm not thrilled about bailouts in general, but I feel a lot better about keeping this industry afloat than bailing out wall street bankers.
The question is: what is the best way to keep the auto industry afloat?
I support the idea of helping them raise needed capital by helping them reduce their inventory of unsold vehicles.

too late! we already have really massive unemployment and a depression.
"we already have really massive unemployment and a depression."
Well then, I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief. My understanding of a depression is that things are far worse in an actual one than the reality of today's economy.
For example, during the Great Depression, unemployment rates were in the range of 20% or higher.
Today, it's in the range of what, six percent? Seven? And most people today who are unemployed receive unemployment compensation.
I've heard my mother talk about how her father, who owned a grocery store in a small town, gave away groceries to many of the poor in their town during the Depression.
We still have a quite a way more to go before it can be said that we are in a Depression.
We may yet get there, but for now, we're still in a recession and the actions being taken in Washington, even as I write this, are designed to prevent what we all rightly fear COULD happen: Depression.
i guess we can all rest assured because we are not in a great depression, whew!

Have you lost your job, home, automobile etc.?
