British Phone Hacking Scandal

I have yet to find *exactly HOW* so many phones were "hacked" into. Is it really that easy to hack a cell phone, or is there some spying/intel connection here? If the latter, this would certainly cement the idea of the media being joined at the hip with intel agencies.
