President Obama said Tuesday that he would send an additional 17,000 American troops to Afghanistan this spring and summer.
This being said -- I still am glad Obama is president versus McCain. And in some ways, I find Obama rather endearing (also this and this). Withdrawing from Iraq is also a good thing, although it would be nicer if it was quicker.

Does anyone here have a theory about how things could possibly be any different as long as our system of government is dependent on private sources of funding for running political campaigns?

LOL-- yeah.
We understand that armies will become progressively more private in the future, like all else. A copy of 1500 Italy. But the city heads were continually sweating the finance. They, Medicis and all those folks, had no bottomless pit of funds as the PTB do now. Magic.
Well, at least so much for die for your country, rather die for your bank account. A lot more honest.
Incidentally, why do all US events have 10 to 20 US flags behind the folks on the stage. Does that not contradict the symbolism, the point, the concept, is that not crass, unpatriotic, or something. The big push?
