The Flight 93 Phone Calls-- Part I, Tom Burnett

The flight 93 phone calls were what created the flight 93 legend of the passenger revolt, and made the passengers national heroes.

However, in several of the most famous phone calls, there are very strange details. Furthermore, when taken together, the phone calls have a number of inconsistencies.

For the next few posts, I will go over each of the key flight 93 phone calls and go over the strange details.

The source for these phone calls will be Jere Longman's book "Among the Heroes", unless otherwise noted.

Tom Burnett was sitting in first class. He called his wife four times during the course of the hijacking, at 9:27am, 9:34 am, 9:45am and 9:54am. Each time he got through and spoke to her (I wonder what cell phone service he had!)

At 9:27am, he tells his wife there are hijackers, they have knifed a passenger and one of the hijackers has a gun. (None of the other flight 93 passengers notes that the hijackers have a gun). Burnett also says the hijackers say they have a bomb on board.

At 9:34am, he tells his wife "they're in the cockpit", and his wife gives Burnett info about the WTC attacks.

At 9:45am, according to Longman: "The hijackers, Tom said, were talking about crashing the plane into the ground. 'We have to do something'"

At 9:54am, he calls his wife and describes the passenger's plan to take control of the plane. Says "We're going to do something".

So, apart from the gun issue, there are two really strange things here:

First of all, no one else has said there was more than one hijacker guarding the passengers. Thus, how could Burnett hear the hijackers discussing this? Was he listening through the cockpit door? Were the hijackers saying this over the PA?

Second, why on earth would the hijackers be talking about putting the plane on the ground-- before the passenger revolt? This is clearly BEFORE the passenger revolt because Tom says: 'We have to do something'.

This makes no sense with the official story, but does provide some interesting foreshadowing.
