I Find It Odd That Americans Are Willing to Spend One Hundred Billion Dollars a Year to Promote "Democracy" in Iraq

yet American politicians are remarkably stingy about giving foreign aid in general.

In large part, much of the many we spend in Iraq goes to military contractors and the military itself. So this money feeds back on the US in a demented way: we are paying our military machine lots of money to "bring democracy" to Iraq. Plus we get to blow up bad guys. In a sick way, it all makes sense.

But I am very curious if the seemingly clueless diplomatic bumbling of the Bush administration in Iraq is all part of a plan to keep the country unstable, requiring our continued presence. I know liberals would just say the Bush administration is simply incompetent and conservatives would blame this story on the media and on Iraqis, but netiher of these is a very good explanation. The Iraq failures are too big and too embarrassing to be blamed on anything but a deliberate plan.
