I almost wonder if the whole point of this story was simply to plant the "ZOMG! Al Qaeda is in Somalia too!!!" meme.

Good points. If you or anyone else reading this has an opinion about what comes to the mind of the average person upon reading of or hearing the
words "Al Qaeda", I'd appreciate knowing your thoughts.
"al qaeda" clearly is symbolic for an ever-present extreme menace that we cannot extinguish without seemingly endless war and killing. The "al qaeda" meme seemingly perpetuates the whole war on terror (bogus) concept.
