Islamic Terrorism, 9/11 and The Record of the Bush Administration/US Government: Two Different Scenarios

Which one of these scenarios is more probable?*

*This analysis does not include any specific detail of the 9/11 attacks.

(Abbreviations: AQ = Al Qaeda; BAUSG = Bush administration/United States Government; USIA = US intelligence agencies)

The Overt "Official" Scenario:
--Starting in the late 1970’s, AQ allied itself with the US in the fight against the USSR in Afghanistan and then AQ allied with the US in the fight against Russia in Chechnya, but starting in the 1990’s, AQ started hating the US for a number of reasons, mostly because of the “freedoms” enjoyed by Americans and because of the US alliance with Israel.

--The threat to the US from AQ grows over the years, starting with bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993, followed by bombing of African embassies in 1998, then the USS Cole bombing in 2001.

--The threat of AQ culminates in the horrific attacks of 9/11/2001.

--The 9/11 attacks were daring attacks of imagination and caught the US air defenses completely off guard and by surprise.

--Even though USIA were tracking AQ, they did not have good enough penetrance into AQ and were unable to completely unravel the 9/11 plot in time.

--Even though USIA worked closely with the Pakistani intelligence service, who had successfully infiltrated AQ, the USIA were unable to completely unravel the 9/11 plot in time.

--Before 9/11, multiple warnings were issued of an imminent attack by both USIA and foreign intelligence agencies; these warnings even specified that hijacked airplanes might be used and the airplanes might be used as missiles.

--Before 9/11, the US Air Force and NORAD ran exercises simulating hijacked airplanes crashing into buildings, yet the 9/11 attacks took them by surprise.

--Despite the dire threat of a major attack that could kill hundreds or thousands of people, the warnings were fumbled throughout the BAUSG and thus every security agency throughout the country was caught by surprise by 9/11.

--While a major terrorist attack on US soil would greatly help the Bush administration’s clear pre-9/11 agenda of invading Iraq, it is just a coincidence that the warnings of an imminent attack were fumbled throughout the BAUSG and thus every security agency throughout the country was caught by surprise by 9/11.

--While a major terrorist attack on US soil would greatly strengthen the power of the executive branch and greatly help the Bush administration’s extreme right-wing domestic agenda getting passed, it is just a coincidence that the warnings of an imminent attack were fumbled throughout the BAUSG and thus every security agency throughout the country was caught by surprise by 9/11.

--While a major terrorist attack on the World Trade Center would effectively cover-up massive financial fraud that had been taking place, it is just a coincidence that the warnings of an imminent attack were fumbled throughout the BAUSG and thus every security agency throughout the country was caught by surprise by 9/11.

--While a major terrorist attack on US soil would provide a perfect distraction from massive corporate fraud (e.g. Enron) and the bursting of the stock market bubble, it is just a coincidence that the warnings of an imminent attack were fumbled throughout the BAUSG and thus every security agency throughout the country was caught by surprise by 9/11.

--While a major terrorist attack on US soil would greatly strengthen the power of the military, provide a perfect excuse to increase the US global empire and thus enrich US defense contractor, energy and financial oligarchs, it is just a coincidence that the warnings of an imminent attack were fumbled throughout the BAUSG and thus every security agency throughout the country was caught by surprise by 9/11.

--While a number of FBI employees came forward as whistleblowers and complained that evidence relating to 9/11 had been or was being covered up, these are merely the exaggerated claims of disgruntled employees.

--Although the information technology company Ptech had access to FAA and other government agency computers before 9/11 and was run by a man with terrorist connections, this is not really important or anything that US citizens need to know about.

--After 9/11, potential terrorists were rounded up and detained in the US, the ITAQ base in Afghanistan was attacked, AQ members were rounded up and detained in concentration camps and the AQ organization was severely degraded.

--Two of the key leaders of AQ, Ayman Al-Zawahiri and Osama bin Laden, evaded capture during the invasion of Afghanistan, and they have eluded capture for almost four years, despite living in areas controlled by the US or its ally Pakistan.

--The BAUSG says it is not particularly interested in bringing Osama bin Laden to justice even though they claim he is responsible for the killings of three thousand Americans.

--Even though Ayman Al-Zawahiri is thought to be the real mastermind behind AQ, he is almost completely ignored by the BAUSG.

--On the basis of a greatly exaggerated WMD threat and vague connections to AQ, Iraq was invaded by the BAUSG and a coalition of troops from non-Islamic countries, thus angering the Islamic world.

--At a time when the BAUSG is trying to placate the Islamic world, the Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo scandals come to light, showing that the BAUSG systematically abused prisoners in a way highly insulting to Islamic people.

-- Almost four years after 9/11, there have been no new terrorist attacks on US soil, despite the fact that: 1) that the US is a huge country with thousands of vulnerable targets, 2) people move around the US with essentially unimpeded freedom, and 3) the BAUSG has fostered new hatred of the US by its unprovoked invasion of Iraq and its humiliation of Islamic people in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo.



The Covert "Conspiratorial" Scenario:

--The BAUSG is not particularly interested in bringing Osama bin Laden to justice for the killings of three thousand Americans because he isn’t really responsible for the 9/11 attacks and he is a useful US intelligence asset.

--Ayman Al-Zawahiri is an even more useful intelligence asset than bin Laden and thus is easily ignored by the BAUSG.

--On the basis of a greatly exaggerated WMD threat and vague connections to AQ, Iraq was invaded by the BAUSG and a coalition of troops from non-Islamic countries, thus angering the Islamic world; this was done partly on purpose in order to promote a “clash of civilizations” between the US and Islamic world, since the US deemed the Islamic world as a threat top its global supremacy; this was also done to secure the huge Iraqi oil reserves.

--At a time when the BAUSG is ostensibly and overtly trying to placate the Islamic world, the Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo scandals come to light, showing that the BAUSG systematically abused prisoners in a way highly insulting to Islamic people; this was done on purpose in order to promote a “clash of civilizations” between the US and Islamic world, since the US deemed the Islamic world as a threat top its global supremacy.

--Because the BAUSG has ultimate control over AQ, there have been no new terrorist attacks on US soil almost four years after 9/11.
