I Would Understand the Iraq War Better

if I knew why exactly and when exactly it was that the Bush administration took Henry Kissinger as their guru and decided Iraq was their chance to re-fight Vietnam.

Specifically, was this their plan from the very beginning?

Or did they screw up the initial stages of the war due to poor planning/short-sightedness and then decide the resulting quagmire was a chance to exorcise their personal Vietnam demons?

The problem is that neither of these explanations make perfect sense-- which is why I am confused about their game-plan.

I think it's like the failed CEO syndrome: CEO wrecks one company so he gets hired as CEO of another company.

Kissenger is in bed with these Military Industrial Complex guys. Wars are great for the Defense industry. It's as simple as that.

If Peace breaks out, those guys go out of business. There's a very interesting quote from the Raytheon CEO speaking at an alumni conference (before 911) when he talks about how awful it is to have to lay people off. When you work on Beam Weapons all day long, it must make you feel all warm and fuzzy to see how well they work.

Besides, it's not like those guys are traumatized worrying about the next terrorist attack. They just want to sell a bunch of high-tech stuff to the goverment at inflated prices. The Bush administration and 911 were a dream come true for them (even if they are sorry that a few thousand americans and several hundred thousand brown people had to lose their lives... everyone's gotta die sometime.)

If you ever get bored one day, look at the PNAC documents. Do a search, and you'll find no mention of people, soldiers, families, but hundreds of references to budget, expenditure, systems, weapons, etc.

For those guys, it's all about selling war machinery. They look at it like "how many new helicopters will we be able to sell if fighting breaks out with Russia."
