i don't know what the social(ist?)ramifications of this bill will entail, but i do know that it has been much bandied about that every U.S. person will be required to purchase a healthcare policy, failure of which to do so will result in huge penalty.
if so, then this bill would seem to have been written by the health insurance industry itself.
anyway, what kind of fool *representative of the people* would vote for a 2000 page bill that he/she could not possibly have had time to read?
just like the massive patriot act and the even more massive "stimulus" bills.
so much for the no taxation without representation that the founding fathers of this country fought for.
My thinking is that the bill is not socialist enough! Too much input from the health insurance capitalist moguls. I actually think the bill will result in some modest improvement in health care for all, but won't save as many people as should be saved.
The average person is quick to
condemn people who do have car
insurance - despite the fact that
their own insurance would cover the
cost of repairs if their car is
damaged by an uninsured driver, so
why do they get so upset about a
requirement that everyone purchase
medical insurance?
Thanks, I'll hold.
On edit - should read "people who
do NOT have car insurance.
Sorry for the mistake above.
unfortunately todays economics seem to entail privatization of profits with socialization of costs/losses.
one has only to observe the recent bank/wall street bailouts (stimulus plans) to discern this.
the average john Q public (or most likely his children) is screwed no matter what.
by the way, i have complete coverage auto insurance in case some fool without ins. runs into my car.
you cannot equate manditory auto ins. with manditory health ins.
My view is that it is insane that insurance companies are making a profit based on what kind of health care you get. Obviously the system is fucked up and even modest reforms are welcome.
I think single-payer is the way to go, but it remains to be seen what the final health care bill will do in terms of mandatory insurance etc.
"you cannot equate manditory auto ins. with manditory health ins."
I just did. Why can't you? The
logic is the same in both cases.
the logic is not the same at all - you have mandatory auto ins. to protect other drivers from yourself.
Wrong. The logic is exactly the
same.
The state requires auto insurance.
It's corporate welfare for the
insurance industry. The state can,
and most likely WILL require everyone
to purchase medical insurance.
It's just another example of
corporate welfare.
Soon, the state may require that
everyone purchase a life insurance
policy.
Here's another realistic example
of what could happen. The state
could mandate that all school
children who do not score a certain
minimum on TAKS tests will be
required to attend supplementary
classes at the expense of their
parents. Education insurance
could even be mandated for such
a purpose.
Politicians and lobbyists will
always be able to come up with
plausible arguments to justify
corporate welfare schemes, and
the naive, gullible portion of
the public will agree. The rest
will have no choice but to pay uP
or face the consequences -- just
like what is being proposed with
the mandatory medical insurance
legislation that is being
seriously proposed.
again, your mandatory auto liability ins. is to protect other drivers from your driving.
however, all the scenarios that you propose do not seem that unlikely.
Again, using the same logic about
protecting" other taxpayers from
having to pay for YOUR not having
medical insurance, the government
can/will mandate more corporate
welfare to the insurance industry
by requiring you to purchase
insurance.
At least you were able to grasp
that creative lobbyists and
politicians can/will come up with
plenty of other schemes to transfer
wealth to the insurance industry.
Most well-informed people knew that
making car insurance mandatory was
a huge mistake because it just
opened the floodgates for lots
more where that came from.
Mandatory medical insurance is
next, but it won't be the last
method of this particular type
of corporate welfare.
