US Invasion of Panama in 1989-- "Operation Just Cause"
Until reading about it this morning, I really only remembered the siege of Noriega holed up at the Vatican embassy.
Obviously it was another US coup, involving a drug-dealing dictator that the US had nurtured and who apparently had gone rogue.
What I hadn't realized is that several THOUSAND Panamanian civilians apparently died in the US bombing campaign. Fuck.

Why was Noriega targeted for removal? Because he was a threat to Poppy Bush.
I know a lot about this and I used to know a high-ranking official -- last name NORIEGA ---in the Government of the Republic of Panama. I also met the wife of his U.S. attorney, Frank Rubino.
Noriega was on the cia payroll ($100K per year = approximately $500K in today's money).
Manuel Noriega was not a drug dealer. Poppy targeted him out of fear that he might reveal what he knew, thereby, threatening poppy's presidency, and his (then) upcoming reelection.

OK-- so what did Noriega know about Poppy Bush???
Noriega knew that Bush was CIAD and President while Noriega was being paid $100K s year for facilitating CIA drug smuggling and U.S.- funded support of "Freedom fighters" in Nicaragua, and he was thus in a position to cause major problems for Bush's campaign or the presidency.
Would Bush take extreme measures, if he thought they would be important in his desire to become President? Ask Nancy Reagan or the Iranian leaders who were part of the Iran-Contra scandal that Bush said he was "out of the loop" of. Ask any well-informed person about where Bush was on 11-22-63.
He also surely knew of Bush's involvement in the 1980 "October Surprise"...an act of treason undertaken to prevent the reelection of President Carter, and being a military man, he would likely have known about WW2 war "hero" Bush - who bailed out of the plane he was piloting...leaving his crew to their deaths when the plane crashed into the Pacific.
There's plenty more.
